Logo blackout not in breach of Bersatu charter, Marzuki says

MARZUKI Yahya has questioned Hamzah Zainudin’s decision to act against members who posted a black version of the Bersatu logo on social media to protest against the party’s direction under Muhyiddin Yassin.

The members in question support Dr Mahathir Mohamad, whose position as party chairman is in dispute.

“Such actions do not violate any provisions of the Bersatu constitution. Rather, it is members’ responsibility to uphold its principles,” said former secretary-general Marzuki in a statement last night.

Marzuki, who president Muhyiddin replaced in the post with Hamzah, said his successor is in no position to challenge the logo “blackout” campaign.

“How can Hamzah ask questions about Bersatu logos and emblems when he himself is involved in the movement to sacrifice the party’s original principles?

“The blackout campaign is a serious expression of opposition from the grassroots, who wish to continue to be led by those who remain principled, and to return the party to its original goals.”

Hamzah yesterday warned that members who tamper with the party’s logo will face action.

In their protest that began on Tuesday night, Bersatu members backing Dr Mahathir posted images of the party logo in black instead of its original red.

Mukhriz Mahathir and Amiruddin Hamzah, who, along with Dr Mahathir and two other MPs, had their memberships terminated for sitting with the opposition during the May 18 Parliament meeting, did the same.

Bersatu supreme council members Ulya Aqamah Husamuddin and Tariq Ismail, too, swapped their social media profile photos with the black version of the party logo.

Tariq, in a Facebook post, said the blackout campaign was approved by Dr Mahathir.

“The black logo is a sign of protest by the members who remain united, principled and dignified, so that the party can be restored to its original path.”

Ulya, meanwhile, denied claims that the campaign has received a lukewarm response.

“Some of them (members supporting Dr Mahathir) didn’t change their profile picture, but shared the logo on social media.”

Muar MP Syed Saddiq Syed Abdul Rahman, who has lost his party membership, is among those who shared the modified logo.

On June 9, Dr Mahathir and five other Bersatu leaders filed a suit against Muhyiddin and three others, claiming they are still party members.

They are also seeking a court declaration that Muhyiddin is not a member.

The prime minister, in response, applied to strike out the suit. – June 20, 2020.
