Enough, Azmin says of Dr Mahathir-Anwar power tussle

MOHAMED Azmin Ali today called for an end to the tussle for power between Dr Mahathir Mohamad and Anwar Ibrahim, ongoing since 1998.

The senior minister said until today, Pakatan Harapan claims to have the majority support of lawmakers, but has hit a dead end on who should be named as its prime minister candidate.

“Enough. Until now, the issue of who is to be named as prime ministerial candidate is not resolved.

“Since 1998, the people were dragged to the streets and into the political battle between these two individuals.

“If not A, it is B. If not B, it is A,” Azmin told reporters in Kuala Lumpur today.

While he did not specifically mention names, Azmin is believed to be referring to Dr Mahathir and Anwar.

PH was expected yesterday to announce its prime ministerial candidate ahead of possible fresh elections.

But a meeting was cancelled at the last minute after the PH parties could not decide. It was reported that Dr Mahathir aspired to hold the office – for a third time – for one year under the PH ticket.

The 22-month-old PH government collapsed on February 24 after Dr Mahathir resigned and Bersatu withdrew from the coalition. Bersatu and a group of 10 MPs led by Azmin, later joined Barisan Nasional, PAS, GPS and several Sabah MPs to form the Perikatan Nasional government.

It is estimated that PN has 115 MPs supporting it while PH has 107.

The former PKR deputy president also urged the party to do some soul searching, following a spate of departures. He said the exodus was because members were disgruntled with what was happening in the party.

“When are we going to resolve the nation’s problems?

“I think for at least the next three months, people (should) not ask ‘who is the next PM?’ Peace for three months.” 

Earlier this week, Sementa rep Dr Daroyah Alwi and 48 others left PKR, citing a loss of confidence in Anwar’s leadership. – June 17, 2020.

  • What a joke. Arseman seem fit to give advice to his ex-bosses. Arsemin has reduced himself to a non entity that's neither welcome in Bersatu nor Umno. To think I had high hopes for him initially when he rose to prominence. Sad
