Not allowing debate on RCI report shows it was political, say Pakatan leaders

THE decision not to allow a debate on the royal commission of inquiry (RCI) report clearly showed it was a political move, said opposition leader Wan Azizah Wan Ismail.

The Permatang Pauh MP also questioned why the RCI report that was tabled and handed to parliamentarians this morning was done on the year’s last sitting of the Dewan Rakyat.

“This is politically motivated. This report was completed and sent to the Yang di Pertuan Agong six weeks ago.

“It should have been given to us earlier. Why didn’t this happen? Today when we asked for the report to be debated, the request was rejected.

This shows what we previously thought about the RCI is true. It’s a political move since the issue was raised after many years to get back at their political enemies,” she said at a press conference in Parliament today.

The report stated former BNM adviser Nor Mohamed Yackop was responsible for the billions of ringgit in losses incurred by Bank Negara Malaysia through forex trading.

A total of RM31.5 billion was lost by Bank Negara as a result of forex trading from 1992 to 1994.

The RCI had proposed police investigate former prime minister Dr Mahathir Mohamad, former finance minister Anwar Ibrahim, a member of the BNM board of directors, the National Audit Department and the Ministry of Finance.

DAP secretary-general Lim Guan Eng was also shocked the report was tabled at the last day of the parliamentary session.

“This report has made some recommendations and when I stood up to ask the report be discussed, the minister said the decision would be made later.

I hope something important like this will be discussed and not closed so later it can be decided by the federal government. The report must be debated in Parliament,” he said.

Lim said the recommendations made by RCI in the report were very important and have a major impact on Malaysia.

“These findings suggest action be taken against former prime ministers, former finance ministers, BNM and ex-governors, all board members, head of state audit, Khazanah and other ministries and their staff. Almost all financial systems are involved,” he said.

The Bagan MP said he raised the matter in Parliament in 1994 and at that time the amount reported was only RM10.7 billion.

“If we look at BNM figures at that time, there was no mention of RM31.5 billion. The difference now in the report is about RM21 billion ringgit.

“How can RM21 billion be hidden in BNM accounts? This raises some serious questions,” he said. – November 30, 2017.
