ANWAR Ibrahim should be investigated for misleading the cabinet and Parliament on the actual losses incurred by Bank Negara Malaysia (BNM) in the forex transactions in the 1990s, the royal commission of inquiry (RCI) said in its report.
In the report tabled in the Dewan Rakyat today, the RCI proposed an investigation be carried out against Anwar, the former deputy prime minister and finance minister, for cheating.
“This misrepresentation (by Anwar) included informing the cabinet on April 6, 1994 that there was a ‘loss on paper amounting to RM9 billion in 1992’ although he knew the actual figure was RM12.353 billion as recorded in the letter from Ishak Tadin to him,” the report said.
Ishak was the auditor-general, who was the last witness called to testify before the RCI.
Anwar is currently serving a five-year term for sodomising his former assistant, Mohd Saiful Bukhari Azlan.
The report also revealed that Anwar made a decision on the accounting for the profit and loss, trading of shares and the issuance of guarantee letters to enable the auditor-general to issue a clean audit certificate for the BNM annual report 1993.
According to the report, by submitting an annual report to the cabinet and not revealing the exact description, Anwar had deliberately caused the cabinet to approve the 1993 annual report to be gazetted and submitted to Parliament.
“Whether the cabinet would have approved the annual report if not misled is a question that needs to be investigated next,” the RCI report said.
According to the RCI report, there is a need for further investigation on whether the “fraud” caused or potentially caused damage or harm to anyone in terms of body, mind, reputation or property. – November 30, 2017.
