ONLINE gambling is on the rise during the movement-control order (MCO) enforcement period, said the inspector-general of police.

Without revealing details of the arrests that have been made, Abdul Hamid Bador said syndicates are targeting people confined indoors under the government directive.

“Instead of taking a break while the MCO is being enforced, I understand that these people are resorting to online gambling,” he told a special press conference at Bukit Aman yesterday.

He vowed action against anyone found to be engaging in such activities.

The nation’s top cop also revealed that there has been an increase in cigarette smuggling, believed to be carried out via food-delivery services.

“Cigarette smuggling is becoming rampant as premises selling cigarettes are running out of stock.

“They (smugglers) are using food-delivery services. As such, I have directed police manning roadblocks to inspect food-delivery vehicles.”

He added that irresponsible parties are misusing the logos of food-delivery companies to go out during the MCO. – Bernama, April 7, 2020.
