HOTELS, port and docking services, and e-commerce have been included in the “essential services” category, meaning they can remain open during the movement-control order enforcement period.

The decision, made known in a government gazette dated today, clears the uncertainty concerning the hotel industry.

It was reported that guests were told that they could not check in from today despite having made bookings before Putrajaya’s announcement on the restriction order, which takes effect today until March 31.

The gazette said premises providing essential services can remain open so long as they keep the number of employees and customers at a minimum.

According to another government FAQ, restaurants and cafes in hotels can only provide takeaway services.

Patrons are also advised not to use hotel facilities.

As for port and docking services, their inclusion is to ensure the smooth flow of cargo to and from the country.

The movement-control order is part of the government’s efforts to stem the spread of Covid-19, which has infected hundreds of people in Malaysia and killed two. – March 18, 2020.
