GABUNGAN Parti Sarawak (GPS) leaders met late into the night yesterday and decided to give their support to Muhyiddin Yassin, said Wan Junaidi Tuanku Jaafar.

The Santubong MP told The Malaysian Insight they were forced to have the meeting online as the Yang di-Pertuan Agong wanted the respective political parties’ answer on who they wanted as prime minister today.

The GPS was scheduled to meet in Kuala Lumpur tomorrow.

“It’s a case of time constraints because the king wants to end the impasse. (So) We had our meeting online and we decided on Muhyiddin,” he said

Yang di-Pertuan Agong Al-Sultan Abdullah Ri’ayatuddin Al-Mustafa Billah Shah picked the Bersatu president as the next prime minister today after a final round of meeting with party leaders this morning.

Muhyiddin will take the oath of office as the country’s eighth prime minister at Istana Negara tomorrow at 10.30am.

Wan Junaidi simply said the state coalition had dropped its support for Dr Mahathir Mohamad was because of DAP.

In the horse trading that had taken place at a dizzying pace, DAP today reportedly dumped PKR president Anwar Ibrahim as its preferred candidate and threw its support behind Dr Mahathir.

Chief Minister Abang Johari Openg at a GPS function in Belaga today said it would be stupid of GPS to support a party that had accused the coalition of not being able to administer the state.

The chief minister said it is hard to work with DAP, considering it is DAP’s objective to oust GPS in the coming state election.

“There is a party that needs our help (but) they say Sarawak is going bankrupt,” alluding to DAP secretary-general Lim Guang Eng’s allegation in June last year that the state will end up bankrupt in three years’ time.

Lim said with the state’s annual budget of RM11 billion, Sarawak’s RM30 billion reserves would be wiped out in three years.

“Stupid of us to support a party like that,” he said.

Masing had earlier this week said it was better for GPS to work with PAS than DAP.

Wan Junaidi agreed that it would be easier to work with PAS.

He said the PAS of today is the PAS of yesterday.

“They are more flexible than DAP. We have seen what DAP has been doing.

“DAP is made with politicking rather than looking after his ministry.”

He said Sarawakians do not have to look far as they could just look at Chong, the former domestic trade and consumer affairs minister “who talks about other ministries, roads, education but little of his own”. – February 29, 2020.
