SUPPORTING DAP is a “stupid” move, Gabungan Parti Sarawak (GPS) president Abang Johari Openg said today, reiterating his stand that the state coalition will not work with the Pakatan Harapan (PH) component party.
Johari, who is Sarawak chief minister said DAP had accused GPS of not being able to administer the state and of going bankrupt in three years.
He said this is Sarawak DAP’s ploy in its campaign for the coming state election.
“Stupid of us to support a party like that,” the chief minister said at the launch of GPS’ Belaga and Murum zones in Belaga today.
He was referring to comments by Sarawak DAP and state PH chief Chong Chieng Jen who earlier said Sarawak DAP was willing to make concessions and “put aside all differences” to work together with GPS in the interest of the nation.
Chong made the offer in return for GPS’ support of Dr Mahathir Mohamad to be the prime minister in a race against Bersatu president Muhyiddin Yassin, who has Umno and PAS on his side.
Johari said he took issue with DAP secretary-general Lim Guan Eng’s claim last June, that Sarawak under the GPS administration would go bankrupt in three years.
Lim had been finance minister before the PH federal government collapsed earlier this week.
Lim had said with the state’s annual budget of RM11 billion, Sarawak’s RM30 billion reserves would be wiped out in three years.
Both PH and Perikatan Nasional – Bersatu, Umno, PAS and ex-PKR MPs under Mohamed Azmin Al – are eyeing GPS’ support in the race to install the next prime minister and form a government.
Without GPS, PH has 94 MPs ((including Dr Mahathir and Bersatu youth chief Syed Saddiq Syed Abdul Rahman), and Muhyiddin’s pact has 96.
A simple majority of 112 MPs out of 222 in the Dewan Rakyat is needed to form the government. – February 29, 2020.
