DAP is discussing plans to renominate Dr Mahathir Mohamad as prime minister following his resignation today, sources told The Malaysian Insight.

The proposal was mooted to the party’s assemblymen and MPs at the DAP headquarters in Kuala Lumpur.

It is now being discussed by the central executive committee in a closed-door meeting, said one source.

The source said DAP will make an announcement later today.

If the leadership agrees to the proposal, DAP will be the second Pakatan Harapan party to nominate the 94-year-old Dr Mahathir to regain the post of prime minister.

Earlier, Amanah president Mohamad Sabu said his party of 11 MPs will support Dr Mahathir as the next prime minister and to continue leading PH.

“We stand by PH and Dr Mahathir for a better Malaysia,” he said in a statement.

PH has collapsed following Bersatu’s move to leave the pact, taking with it 26 MPs. PKR, meanwhile, has lost 11 parliamentarians.

The coalition now has 102 MPs, 10 short of the simple majority needed to form the federal government.

Dr Mahathir also announced his resignation as Bersatu chairman today.

One source said there is a “rift” between party leaders.
