PAS drops motion for vote of confidence in Dr Mahathir

PAS is no longer going to push for a vote of confidence in Prime Minister Dr Mahathir Mohamad after the Pakatan Harapan presidential council’s decision on the leadership transition, said secretary-general Takiyuddin Hassan.

According to Takiyuddin, the council’s decision has effectively ended undemocratic attempts to unseat a sitting prime minister.

“It is no longer relevant to push for the proposed motion because the prime minister can now focus on the implementation of policies and reviving the economy, without undue politically motivated interference,” he told The Star today.

Yesterday, Dr Mahathir Mohamad said he will step down from office after the Asia Pacific Economic Co-operation (Apec) summit in November.

However, no transition date was set by the PH council.,

“There were two opinions, but in the end, it was left to me. They will follow what I say, and I said the transition will take place after the Apec summit.

“No time, no date, no nothing (is set),” he told reporters.

Takiyuddin, the Kota Baru MP, said when the Islamist party proposed the motion of confidence, its intention was not to take over the government.

He noted that the now that the democratically appointed prime minister is generally accepted, everyone could look forward to political stability.

“They can now focus on discharging their duties and responsibilities without looming uncertainties and confusion. They should focus on reviving the economy,” Takiyuddin said in the report. – February 22, 2020.
