ABDUL Hadi Awang today reiterated PAS’ aim to table a vote of confidence on Dr Mahathir Mohamad’s leadership at next month’s Parliament meeting, even after the prime minister said he will quit after the Apec summit in November.
The Islamist party president said the move was not to apple polish the 94-year-old premier but to “save the nation”, as political scheming on who should be the next prime minister continues unabated.
“We know there are cowards (penakut)... afraid of this motion. We (PAS) are not afraid. It doesn’t matter even if our motion is not supported; we are accustomed to losing.
“We want to save the nation. Not just the Malays and Muslims, but other races as well,” Hadi, who is also Marang MP, said in an interview with the party’s organ, Harakah daily.

Hadi said Dr Mahathir, who returned for a second stint as prime minister in 2018, was still the best person to lead the country and should be allowed to do so until the end of his term.
He said Dr Mahathir has the experience to helm the country, despite experiencing problems in this current term.
“But we are confident he can overcome them,” he said.
Earlier today, Dr Mahathir had said he was committed to leaving office after the Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation (Apec) summit in November, even as the opposition plans to move a parliamentary motion to keep him in office for a full term.
“He (Anwar) met me yesterday, and his statement on the meeting is correct.
“I am not involved in any other activity. I have promised to leave after Apec, and will keep my promise,” the Langkawi MP told reporters after an event on the island.
Anwar had yesterday also said that the transition process would be finalised at next week’s Pakatan Harapan presidential council meeting.
Meanwhile, Hadi also took a dig at MPs he claimed are afraid of the motion, labelling them “cowards”.
Hadi said if the motion does come to a vote, then lawmakers who do not want Dr Mahathir to be prime minister would be exposed.
“These lawmakers are worried the motion will expose their stand. If there are those who disagree, we will know who they are.”
He said the tabling of the motion was very much part of the democratic process that will ask lawmakers to give Dr Mahathir the confidence to carry on as prime minister until the end of his term.
“This is our suggestion and it is a reasonable suggestion.”
He added a unanimous vote of confidence for Dr Mahathir would show that all parties are in agreement and would strengthen his position as prime minister.
Excessive politicking in Pakatan also makes it more imperative that Dr Mahathir stay on to solve the problem and “close the door on this internal crisis”, Hadi said. – February 14, 2020.
