DAP veteran Lim Kit Siang has called for Pakatan Harapan leaders to stop obsessing over the prime minister’s transition of power.

He echoed a call from PKR president Anwar Ibrahim earlier today to stop public arguments on whether Dr Mahathir Mohamad should hand over the reins in May or November.

“Let us move away from the daily fixation and obsession with the transition of power,” he said in a statement today.

“Anwar has advised PH leaders not to  discuss the transition of power issue openly and to honour the consensus on the matter reached in January 2018.

He said PH should focus all its efforts on how to  deliver promises made in the 2018 general election.

“Twenty-twenty is going to be a make-or-break year for PH.”

He acknowledged that the transition of power from Dr Mahathir to Anwar is one of he coalition’s most important promises but said its mechanics should be left to the PH presidential council.

Kit Siang also agreed with DAP secretary-general Lim Guan Eng that while the council should decide on the matter, there was no need to hold a special meeting.

Calls for Dr Mahathir to step down in May have grown since December when he said he preferred to hand over power after Malaysia hosts the Asia Pacific Economic Cooperation (Apec) forum.

The handover to Anwar, although agreed to by all PH parties, does not stipulate a fixed timeline.

Some PKR MPs and DAP leaders have been pushing the issue, leading to open fighting between coalition members. – January 22, 2020.

  • LKS.....so now that your son is in a comfortable and safe position, you have to shut dissenting voices? Whats wrong with asking either TDM or the Presidential Council to set a date for the handover? Certainty will take away all the arguments and all the manipulation that is perceived to exist now, creating a climate of instability and uncertainty. After the date has been fixed, everyone can then work towards a definite goal. The work will never be done, not even if TDM has another lifetime. We cannot rely too much on TDM considering his advanced age. Thus a fixed transition date would definitely be good for everyone, almost except those incompetent Cabinet minsters. The ones speaking out are not demanding TDM steps down immediately but that he fix the date. If its after APEC, then so be it. But still fixing a date is not that difficult if everyone is sincere
