ANWAR Ibrahim understands the issues that could arise in the lead-up to the handover of power from Prime Minister Dr Mahathir Mohamad.
“Anwar said he understands the problems, and the need to reduce the tension raised by people making all kinds of suggestions on when the transfer of power will happen,” Dr Mahathir told reporters in Putrajaya.
He was commenting on his half-hour meeting with the PKR president at the Perdana Leadership Foundation earlier today.
In a statement after the meeting, Anwar said Dr Mahathir has not changed his mind about the power handover and regrets that some quarters are trying to twist the situation to suit their own ends.
He said the leadership transition was among the matters discussed between the two.
“Dr Mahathir’s stand on the transfer of power is the same as mine, as agreed by Pakatan Harapan, and of which he has repeatedly given his assurance.
“I told him that the transfer of power must be done in a peaceful and orderly manner within an agreed timeline.
“We disagree with attempts to deviate from the handover agreement, and attempts to use my or Dr Mahathir’s name for any sinister purposes.”
The Port Dickson MP said he and the prime minister agreed to focus on economic growth and preparations for the Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation Leaders Summit, to be held in Kuala Lumpur next year.
He said Dr Mahathir also took note of allegations against certain ministers who have handed out contracts to gain support. – November 21, 2019.
