CAMBODIAN opposition leader Sam Rainsy remains in Malaysia tonight after being barred from boarding a flight to Indonesia earlier, said a government source.
“Now, Indonesia has allowed him entry. He will board the flight tomorrow morning,” the source told The Malaysian Insight.
Rainsy updated his Facebook page to say that he missed his flight to Jakarta and will arrive tomorrow morning.
Rainsy and Cambodia National Rescue Party (CNRP) colleague Mu Sochua have been in Malaysia this past week in an attempt to return to Cambodia.
PKR leader Tian Chua meanwhile told The Malaysian Insight that Indonesia had agreed to allow Rainsy to enter the country, and that he would fly out tomorrow morning.
Rainsy’s wife, Tioulong Saumura said the exiled CNRP founder will take the earliest flight o Jakarta tomorrow.
Rainsy is expected to arrive at the Soekarno Hatta International Airport at 10am.
The Cambodian politician arrived in Kuala Lumpur International Airport on November 9 after he was not allowed to board a Thai Airways flight in Paris, where he has been living in exile.
On Tuesday, he met Pakatan Harapan MPs at parliament and told reporters afterwards that now is the “best time” for Cambodian opposition figures to return to the country as Prime Minister Hun Sen is under pressure to democratise.
The 70-year old-leader said Phnom Penh faces sanctions by the European Union if it refuses to recognise the opposition.
Sochua also met Pakatan Harapan leaders. She and two other party members were almost deported to Cambodia last week until an intervention by the Human Rights Commission of Malaysia (Suhakam).
The Cambodian opposition figures have been planning to return to the country by land across the border with Thailand. Cambodian troops have been ordered to the border to prevent their entry.
Rainsy when asked on Tuesday about return plans, declined to say more, citing safety and security reasons.
CNRP was established in 2012, when the Candlelight Party founded by Rainsy merged with the Human Rights party.
CNRP was banned in 2017 by Cambodian Prime Minister Hun Sen. – November 13, 2019.
