CAMBODIAN opposition leader Sam Rainsy has been invited by Permatang Pauh MP Nurul Izzah Anwar to meet lawmakers at the Malaysian Parliament tomorrow.

The meeting between self-exiled Rainsy and Malaysian MPs has been scheduled at noon.

Rainsy’s wife Tioulong Saumura will also be present.

“We would like to warmly extend an invitation to both yourself and Honorary Tioulong Saumura for a meeting with Malaysian legislatures in the Malaysian Parliament,” read the invitation letter addressed to Rainsy.

Nurul Izzah confirmed to The Star the content of the letter circulating on Twitter was legitimate.

“Yes, the contents (of the letter) are legit. The meeting will take place in Parliament,” she was quoted as saying.

Rainsy landed at the Kuala Lumpur International Airport on Saturday.

He and other leaders of his Cambodian National Rescue Party (CNRP) are planning to return to Cambodia by land.

He had intended to cross the border with Thailand but was blocked from boarding a Thai Airways flight to Bangkok on Thursday from Paris, where he has been living in exile.

CNRP has been outlawed by Cambodian Prime Minister Hun Sen.

Rainsy’s party colleague, Mu Sochua, was detained in Malaysia on Wednesday ahead of plans to travel to Thailand in preparation for the land crossing into Cambodia.

Sochua and two other opposition leaders were released the next day after an intervention by the Malaysian Human Rights Commission.

Malaysia has said it does not intend to deport the Cambodians to Phnom Penh and will instead find them a third country. – November 11, 2019.
