Former education fund worker gets 146 strokes of rotan for CBT

A FORMER Malacca Education Trust Fund (Tapem) administrative assistant was today sentenced by the sessions court to four years’ jail and 146 strokes of the rotan for criminal breach of trust involving RM2.4 million.

Judge Mohd Nasir Nordin meted out the sentence after Mohd Hanafi Ismail, 31, pleaded guilty to 146 counts of CBT.

A court interpreter took almost two hours to read out all the charges, related to the misappropriation of RM2.404 million meant for scholarships for Malacca students.

Hanafi committed the offences at the Tapem Finance Unit, Bangunan Kota Cemerlang in Hang Tuah Jaya between January 23, 2017 and December 21 last year.

The charges, under Section 408 of the Penal Code, provide for a maximum jail term of 14 years with whipping and a fine upon conviction.

In his judgment, Nasir told Hanafi to repent and return the money to the government.

The prosecution was conducted by Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission prosecuting officers Irwan Shah and Nik Haslinie Hashim. Hanafi was represented by counsel Emirul Sarifudin. – Bernama, November 13, 2019.
