PKR deputy president Mohamed Azmin Ali can be the next prime minister if he quits the party and forms his own, said Umno secretary-general Annuar Musa.
Speaking to reporters at Parliament today, Annuar said it would be interesting to see who else from PKR would defect with Azmin.
“I think we can understand Azmin’s predicament. If he cannot get along with the leadership in PKR, I think he has the freedom to set up a political party of his own.
“That can be quite interesting. Maybe some other members will join him. Who knows, probably he’ll be the prime minister number eight.”
Yesterday, PKR founder Syed Husin Ali reportedly said Azmin had plans to form a new party at the height of the fallout from a sex video implicating him.
He said this was when the discord between Azmin and PKR president Anwar Ibrahim reached its peak over the sex video, which Azmin had denied being in.
Syed Husin added Azmin had thought about joining Bersatu, but members of his faction in PKR were concerned that the non-Malays among them would have no place in the Malay party led by Prime Minister Dr Mahathir Mohamad.
Annuar, meanwhile, said Azmin is free to form a new political party although there are already too many political parties in the country.
“I feel that we have too many political parties, about 30 of them. A little bit too many for a small democracy like us.” – October 10, 2019.
