PKR deputy president Mohamed Azmin Ali can be the next prime minister if he quits the party and forms his own, said Umno secretary-general Annuar Musa.

Speaking to reporters at Parliament today, Annuar said it would be interesting to see who else from PKR would defect with Azmin.

“I think we can understand Azmin’s predicament. If he cannot get along with the leadership in PKR, I think he has the freedom to set up a political party of his own.

“That can be quite interesting. Maybe some other members will join him. Who knows, probably he’ll be the prime minister number eight.”

Yesterday, PKR founder Syed Husin Ali reportedly said Azmin had plans to form a new party at the height of the fallout from a sex video implicating him.

He said this was when the discord between Azmin and PKR president Anwar Ibrahim reached its peak over the sex video, which Azmin had denied being in.

Syed Husin added Azmin had thought about joining Bersatu, but members of his faction in PKR were concerned that the non-Malays among them would have no place in the Malay party led by Prime Minister Dr Mahathir Mohamad.

Annuar, meanwhile, said Azmin is free to form a new political party although there are already too many political parties in the country.

“I feel that we have too many political parties, about 30 of them. A little bit too many for a small democracy like us.” – October 10, 2019.

  • Maybe it will end up only Azmin leaving!!! He can always test the integrity and trustworthiness of his comrades? I hope Azmin is smart enough in this political game.

  • To be PM is only a pipe dream for Azmin.

  • It seems a penchant in Malaysia. A politician rises through the ranks and then the way forward seems blocked by a rival. The politician then throws all the toys out of the pram in a fit of pique. And departs with likeminded hangers-on to form yet another party built around themselves and not on principles and vision. Sigh! And the opposition has a field day stirring up rumours and spreading fake news.

  • Forget it. Azmin hasnt been able to show much achievement even as a Minister of Economic Affairs put aside as a possible PM in future.
