CONTROVERSIAL preacher Zamihan Mat Zin was released from Dang Wangi police district office today.

Zamihan, who was met by his family, was seen leaving the station at 2.30pm. He got into a black Toyota MPV and left without speaking to the media.

His lawyer Fakhrul Azam Abu Hassan said the Kajang Prisons prisoner rehabilitation officer was not allowed to give any statements.

“Zamihan was released as the magistrate did not approve the police application for an extension to his remand last night,” said Fakhrul.

Fakhrul said his client was in good spirits and had cooperated with the police.

“We told the police that this is only a sedition investigation and is not a serious crime. It’s a bailable offence. So, we will wait and see if there will be any charges,” he added.

Meanwhile, Zamihan’s brother, Mohd Zaimi, who was there to meet him said that arrest was unfair as there were many other similar cases that the police did not take action on.

“I’m upset because there are case where others have insulted Islam and there were no charges against them,” said Mohd Zaimi outside the police station.

Zamihan was arrested on Wednesday and remanded for two days after a YouTube video of his comments about the Johor Sultan surfaced this week.

Inspector General of Police Mohamad Fuzi Harun said Zamihan would be investigated for sedition over the lecture in which he criticised the Johor Sultan’s decree against a Muslim-only launderette Muar.
In the video, Zamihan said it was “not right” to ban such launderettes.

Zamihan, a Prisons Department religious officer who is on secondment from the Malaysian Islamic Development Department, has denied his remarks were critical of or insulting to the Johore ruler. – October 14, 2017.
