UMNO and PAS need the support of all Malaysians to guarantee the success of its political alliance, said Khaled Nordin.
A day after the two parties signed a charter, called muafakat nasional (national concord) to strengthen the Malay-Muslim political cooperation, the Umno vice-president said all segments of Malaysia would be included in its plans.
“Umno and PAS believe that any cooperation between the two parties must include the diverse segments of the country.
“Umno and PAS cannot achieve victory alone, and both parties are aware of this.
“Therefore, to form a government, we need the support of every Malaysian, not just from the Malays and Muslims. We have never ignored the interest of other people in the country,” the former Johor menteri besar said in a statement today.
Umno and PAS yesterday ended their decades-long rivalry by inking the charter that forms the basis for their political cooperation.
Thousands of supporters from both parties gathered at the Putra World Trade Centre in Kuala Lumpur to witness the historic event.
Khaled said that the charter will enable the two parties to discuss various issues, including education, federalism and the economy.
Khaled also said that the country could no longer allow one man to dictate its future.
“The charter will provide a national discourse that has never been seen before.
He also hoped that other groups would join the new political cooperation.
“Parties from Sarawak and Sabah, or any civil society group, are more than welcome to join (us).
“Those who perceive this to be about only the Malays and Islam are misguided. We are not trapped in debates about racial and religious sentiments that are being played out by Pakatan Harapan,” he added. – September 15, 2019.
