THE Umno disciplinary board is investigating Hishammuddin Hussein following a complaint, said Mohamed Apandi Ali.
The disciplinary chairman said more details will be revealed when the investigation is completed.
“Like a police investigation, the details of our investigation will be kept secret. I confirm that there is such an investigation but I will not comment further or give more details until the investigation is completed,” he told The Malaysian Insight.
Hishammuddin has been under a cloud of suspicion in the party after he recently met with Prime Minister Dr Mahathir Mohamad.
His action is perceived to be an act of disloyalty as well as a breach of party rules.
Apandi urged party members to remain calm while the probe is underway.
“We are above politics. The disciplinary board is like a judge and we don’t play politics. We will investigate no matter what.
“If we find nothing wrong then the matter ends there.”
Umno advisory council chairman Tengku Razaleigh Hamzah last month recommended stern action against party members found to have strayed from the party struggle.
He said such members should not be left to do as they please as their actions could disrupt efforts to rejuvenate and strengthen the party.
He said this while talking about former party vice-president Hishammuddin’s rendezvous with the prime minister.
Umno president Ahmad Zahid Hamidi said it was up to the disciplinary committee to decide on further action.
Apandi was slated to hold a press conference on August 8 but postponed the event to an undefined date.
He said the press call was not to address the Hishammuddin issue but to reveal the number of members who have been sacked and who have been referred for disciplinary action.
“The disciplinary board is doing its job. There are so many actions taken and so many members sacked; it’s just that we have not made any announcement on that. People just jumped to the conclusion that I was going to make an announcement about Hishammuddin.”
Meanwhile, party secretary-general Annuar Musa said the Umno Supreme Council has not been notified of the Hishammuddin probe.
“The Umno management has not received any complaints about him. If the complaint was made directly to the disciplinary board, they are free to investigate the complaint prima facie and report it to the Supreme Council.
“So far there has been no information about this,” he tweeted. – September 1, 2019.
