AN information technology consultant has been charged with murdering bank manager Syed Muhammad Danial Syed Syakir in a road-rage incident on the KL-Seremban highway, which triggered a heated racial debate on social media.

Clad in a black tee-shirt, Yew Wei Liang was charged with murder at the Kajang magistrates’ court.

No plea was taken from the 41-year-old and the accused acknowledged that he understood the charges.

Magistrate Nor Afidah Idris did not grant bail and ordered that the accused be remanded at Sg Buloh prison.

Defence counsel Varghese Onny said Yew should not be charged with murder and should be charged under Section 41 of Road Transport Act for causing death by driving in a reckless manner.

“We are challenging 302 because he claimed he was coaxed into giving a confession and was beaten up while in custody.

“After the incident, he was taken to Kajang Hospital for medical treatment.”

According to the charge sheet, the accused allegedly murdered Danial near Km293.6 of the North South Expressway (NSE) between 1pm and 2pm on August 10.

Varghese said there was tampering of evidence by the police during investigations as a call was made from his wife’s phone.

“Yew’s father-in-law claimed that he received a phone call from the accused’s wife.

“The phone should be under police possession during the probe,” he said.

S. Selvam, who is also representing Yew, said a complaint has been lodged over the matter with the magistrate.

“We will be lodging a police report over this matter.”

The court fixed September 27 for mention and to hear the complaint by the defence.

Police said last week there were no racial elements in the road-rage incident.

Deputy Inspector-General of Police  Mazlan Mansor also warned the public against spreading news that the road-rage case was racial in nature.

He said they are aware the case has gone viral with many wild accusations being spread on social media.

Mazlan said such baseless accusations will only hamper their investigations.

“Let us do our work. Those who witnessed the incident should talk to the police instead of making claims online.” – August 22, 2019.

  • This is nonsense. A clear cut case of self-defence. Is PRDM saying that if someone comes at you with a baseball bat, you should just sit and allow yourself or your property be beaten?

  • This not racial. Its about Malaysians having poor road ethics, poor tolerance on that road. Im pretty sure a lot of us experience road rage almost on a daily basis. I for sure am one of them. So many of them violate traffic rules i.e. cut-traffic lanes or queues, drive against traffic in one-way lanes, beating the red traffic light and so many more. If you were to merely honk them in disagreement or shock, the violators will in return follow you home and threaten you or curse you in vulgar words. These have all happen to me while Im driving solo.
