AirAsia boss vows to continue fighting passenger service charge

The AirAsia Group CEO likens klia2 to a budget hotel and KLIA to a five-star resort, saying one should not be expected to pay the same money for vastly different facilities and service. – The Malaysian Insight file pic, July 19, 2019.

KLIA and klia2 are miles apart in terms of service quality yet they charge the same rate for passenger service, AirAsia Group CEO Tony Fernandes said today as he vowed to “fight on” against the inequality.

“It’s like saying Tune hotel a budget hotel should charge the same as the Shangri-La hotel a five star hotel.

“If anyone says that Klia1 and klia2 are the same and should be charged the same I seriously ask them to go visit the two terminals,” he said in a series of tweets this morning.

The Kuala Lumpur High Court yesterday ruled that the low-cost airline will have to pay Malaysia Airports (Sepang) Sdn Bhd RM40.73 million in unpaid PSC charges for July to December last year.

Malaysia Airports (Sepang) is a subsidiary of Malaysia Airports Holdings Bhd (MAHB) which is locked in a protracted battle with AirAsia over unpaid charges collected from passengers.

AirAsia has refused to collect the PSC since it was hiked up to RM73 from RM50 in July last year, citing klia’s poor facilities and services.

KLIA charges the same rate and AirAsia maintains that it is unfair to have to pay the same for the poor services that klia2 provides.

After the court ruling yesterday, Fernandez had tweeted his frustration at the decision. He brought up the problem of AirAsia planes having to be towed to the gate because the ground was not uneven at klia2.

“We will continue to fight the battle on behalf of all Malaysians and travellers to Malaysia.

“We have always asked for simple facilities with low airport tax

“We don’t think passengers who use KLIA 2 should pay the same as those who use KLIA 1,” he said today in his tweets.

  • Fully agree with Tony. KLIA2 is really sucks!
Very long walk to terminal and the signages are so confusing.
It's not passengers friendly at all. It should not charge the same rate as KLIA.
