MALAYSIA, as an Islamic country, is firm in its stand on the lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender (LGBT) community, said Deputy Foreign Minister Marzuki Yahya.
He was asked to comment on a report that Hollywood star George Clooney has issued a “warning” to the country, as well as Indonesia, regarding the purported implementation of anti-LGBT laws like in Brunei.
“We have to hold to our principle as a sovereign state and an Islamic country,” Marzuki told reporters after attending a Bersatu breaking-of-fast event in Putrajaya yesterday.
Asked whether Malaysia would support the penalty of stoning to death LGBT folk, he said “definitely not”.
“We will uphold the constitution, the institution of the Malay monarchy, and Islam as the official religion. We will reject anything that goes against the religion.”
On Friday, Clooney said the hotel boycott that forced the Brunei sultan to back down from imposing the death penalty for homosexuality serves as a “warning” to other countries.
Speaking on US talk show Ellen, the US actor-producer said Malaysia and Indonesia are among countries considering such laws.
Marzuki said he hopes Clooney “knew what he was talking about”. – Bernama, May 15, 2019.
