PAS president Abdul Hadi Awang yesterday ruled out a “marriage” between the Islamist party and Umno despite their close ties in recent months.
Such a “marriage” is “incestuous” since both parties are like siblings, Hadi said, despite many demands for the two to seal their cooperation formally.
“There are all sorts of terms being bandied about now. Supposedly that PAS wants to marry Umno. We are brothers, how can we get married? That would be incest,” Hadi said at a dialogue session with Universiti Malaya students in Kuala Lumpur last night.
PAS and Umno campaigned and pooled their supporters’ votes in two recent by-elections – Cameron Highlands and Semenyih – leading to Barisan Nasional’s victory there.
Two weeks ago, both parties, traditional rivals for the Malay vote for decades, said they are forming a working committee to explore ways to enhance their cooperation.
Talk of a formal union between the two parties grew stronger after acting Umno president Mohamad Hasan proposed that they set up “unity governments” in states they control, namely, Terengganu, Kelantan, Perlis and Pahang.
Hadi related the history of PAS’ cooperation with Umno and BN from 1974 to 1978 and with Pakatan Harapan parties PKR and DAP when they formed Barisan Alternatif from 1999 to 2004 and later, Pakatan Rakyat, from 2008 to 2015.
Hadi said the victories in Cameron Highlands and Semenyih are due to the fact that Muslims have realised that Pakatan Harapan could not fulfil its electoral promises.
“We have seen the coming together of Muslims in the Cameron Highlands and Semenyih by-elections. It was not easy as they controlled the federal government, the media. But there was a unity among Malays and how we will take this recipe forward, we will have to wait and see.”
PAS’ detractors, especially in PH, have described a PAS-Umno federal government as similar to the Taliban in Afghanistan, saying that non-Muslims would be doomed if the two took over Putrajaya.
Hadi rejected the notion that PAS would be extremist and not respect non-Muslims.
“Many smear us and say we will be like the Taliban whereas we have for a long time, governed Terengganu and Kelantan. People can see for themselves the situation of non-Muslims in those two states where PAS has taken care of them.” – March 19, 2019.
