PUTRAJAYA should not fund Sisters in Islam (SIS) as the Selangor Islamic Religious Council (Mais) regards it as a deviant group, said the Selangor PAS commissioner.
Sallehin Mukhyi said a fatwa issued by Mais had cast SIS’ ideology as not part of Islam.
“Deputy Women, Family and Community Development Minister Hannah Yeoh should not be giving funds to SIS and should not support the group as the group has been deemed deviant by Mais.
“PAS Selangor regretted the remarks made by Yeoh in defending SIS as a body that has been standing up for Malay-Muslim women,” Sallehin said in a statement today.
Sallehin said the funding from the government has disrespected Selangor’s fatwa on SIS, and it disrespected Sultan Sharafuddin Idris Shah as the head of Islam in Selangor.
“The action by Yeoh is disrespectful towards the Islamic religious council in Selangor as well as being rude to the sultan of Selangor, who is the head of Islam (in the state).
“The funds are against the Islamic principle in Selangor and the deputy minister is challenging the edict made by Mais. We strongly urge the ministry to cancel and withdraw the funds given to SIS,” he said.
Sallehin also demanded that Yeoh to apologise to the sultan of Selangor and Mais following the issue.
Yesterday, Yeoh announced that SIS was the beneficiary of an allocation from the government in support of its activities.
Yeoh said the funds are from the ministry’s budget.
PAS deputy president Tuan Ibrahim Tuan Man objected to the allocation, saying the money should go to groups that are “loyal to Islam and the Malays”.
SIS responded by saying that the group had helped thousands of Muslim women become aware of their rights.
SIS communications manager Majidah Hashim reminded PAS of the work the group has done for more than 30 years to educate Malay-Muslim women on their rights according to shariah law.
“Before making such statements, it would do PAS good to learn more about the work SIS does and its contributions to Malay-Muslim women in Malaysia,” she said.
“For over three decades, SIS has been instrumental in helping thousands of women gain better awareness of and access to their rights in accordance with shariah law in Malaysia.”
She said SIS championed the welfare and potential of the millions of Muslim women in Malaysia. – March 10, 2019.
