A senior citizen has been arrested at his home in Mentakab, Temerloh, for allegedly insulting Prophet Muhammad in a Facebook post.

The 68-year-old man was detained today following several police reports by individuals and Muslim civil society groups since yesterday.

Pahang police chief Mohd Zakaria Ahmad confirmed the arrest, adding that the case would be referred to police in Batu Pahat, where the first police report against the man had been lodged.

“We have made the arrest. He will be sent to the Batu Pahat police headquarters for investigations and further action,” Mohd Zakaria told The Malaysian Insight.

Earlier, Home Minister Muhyiddin Yassin also confirmed that police have opened investigation papers into the senior citizen.

The man, who uses the Facebook profile name “Foo Sing Wai”, had posted a caricature depicting a naked Prophet Muhammad with a naked girl identified as six-year-old Aishah, the youngest of the Prophet’s wives.

The post on Prophet Muhammad and Aishah, two revered figures in Islam, had riled up many Muslims who then lodged reports with police and the Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission.

Mohd Zakaria urged the public to be careful with what they post on social media especially on racial and religious topics. – February 19, 2019.

  • This is an abuse of freedom of speech, before we even have a proper freedom of speech. Don't you know that this will cause an uproar that we don't need. With the ongoing tension you still want to pose something so offensive?

  • I wonder what motivates these stupid bas*ards to write all this nonsense on Facebook? This 68 year man at least should have had some restraint. Very disappointing.

  • For a person born in the year 1953 with such conduct is so unbecoming as back then we dont have such issues on races and religion understanding and respect was always there, they were the unwritten rules that one doesnt cross the line. What trigger for a 66 year old man to do such things?? What has Islam done to him that he got the urged to post such a childish offence work?? Or was it the Malays have been suppressing him there in Mentakab?? Or was it he has stomach it for such a long time and cant hold it anymore?? Taking action not knowing why he acted in the manner he did is not solving the issue, the root cause must be determined.
