A 26-YEAR-OLD man suspected of the assault and robbery of a woman in a lift at a mass rapid transit (MRT) station last Thursday has been remanded for seven days.

Cheras police chief Mohamed Mokhsein Mohamed Zon said the remand begins today until February 25, after going through proceedings this morning following his arrest last night.

“We received a seven-day remand for the man caught last night,” he said.

The suspect was detained by the Cheras serious crime unit (D9) at 8.20pm yesterday in Taman Cheras.

In the 6.45am incident on Thursday, a 48-year-old woman was punched and kicked several times by a man in the lift at the Taman Mutiara MRT station in Cheras, Kuala Lumpur.

The man had followed the victim into the lift before assaulting her and running away with her belongings.

Kuala Lumpur Criminal Investigation Department chief Rusdi Mohd Isa said the victim suffered injuries to several parts of the body and swelling on the forehead.

A 57-second closed-circuit television (CCTV) camera recording, which showed the suspect attacking the woman, has since gone viral on social media.

Earlier, Kuala Lumpur police chief Mazlan Lazim announced the arrest of the suspect, a Malaysian, by a team from the D9 unit from the Cheras police headquarters.

The suspect was believed to have robbed a 24-hour convenience store near the MRT station about 6.30am that day just prior to assaulting the victim in the lift.

Kepong MP Lim Lip Eng had offered RM10,000 reward for any information which could help the authorities nab the robber.

Meanwhile, Prasarana Malaysia Berhad (Prasarana) in a statement today said recordings inside lifts are now displayed directly to staff on duty as an extra precautionary measure following the robbery. – February 19, 2019.
