Corruption, cronyism in Perlis Bersatu, says Wan Saiful

WAN Saiful Wan Jan today disclosed alleged corrupt practices in Perlis Bersatu, the day it was revealed that he had been dropped as the state party secretary, bringing to question the timing of his removal.

Earlier today, state party chief Ameir Hassan was reported as saying that Wan Saiful was dropped as he was too busy with his duties as the National Higher Education Fund (PTPTN) chairman.

Ameir said Wan Saiful’s PTPTN responsibilities were heavy, which had caused him to leave many party matters unattended to.

However, Wan Saiful issued a statement hours later saying all was not well in Perlis Bersatu.

He said that he had recently lodged a police report over false claims for thousands of ringgit.

“I was urged to withdraw the report. I was not sure why I was asked to withdraw the report, and I refused to do so,” he said, without saying who had asked him to withdraw the report or who he named in his report.

Wan Saiful said he was also asked to interfere in the awarding of a government contract worth millions to a company with links to the son of a Perlis Bersatu leader.

“I was offered a huge amount of money to arrange the contract. I refused to engage in any acts of abuse of power.

“I will not compromise on issues of integrity and will not bow to any pressure from anyone, irrespective of their position in Perlis Bersatu, to obtain money illegally,” he said.

Ameir had said that the decision to drop Wan Saiful was made two days ago at a meeting of Perlis Bersatu, which Wan Saiful did not attend.

He said the power to appoint the secretary was with the state party chairman and as such, Wan Saiful was not informed of the intention to drop him ahead of time.

However, a letter has already been sent to him. – January 7, 2019.

  • Saiful is not any better. To abuse PTPTN fund as Zakat to Perlis and Perak is grossly irresponsible.

  • 1. Wan Saifuls claims should be investigated by MACC.

    2. Agreed...Without a proper financially restructured plan for PTPTN to show its self sustainability prior to committing alms to the state is responsible!
