PUTRAJAYA will stand by its stance that aircraft landing at Seletar Airport in Singapore cannot go through Malaysian airspace over Pasir Gudang, Johor, Foreign Minister Saifuddin Abdullah said ahead of his meeting with his Singaporean counterpart on Tuesday.

“We are consistent with our stand and will reiterate that the proposed plan to land on Seletar cannot use Malaysia’s airspace,” Saifuddin told reporters.

“It is hoped that the January 8 meeting would reach an agreement on a matter which needs to be resolved,” he was quoted as saying by The New Straits Times.

Saufuddin is due to meet Singaporean Foreign Minister Vivian Balakrishnan in the republic on Tuesday to discuss the maritime and aviation dispute between the two neighbours.

Last Friday, Malay-language Berita Harian reported that a number of light aircraft and planes were seen circling over Malaysian airspace before landing at Singapore’s Seletar Airport following implementation of the Instrument Landing System (ILS).

The airport, which is mainly used for freight and private aircraft operations as well as commercial turboprop aircraft, is across the Straits of Johor from Johor Port in Pasir Gudang.

On December 12, Transport Minister Anthony Loke had said aircraft approaching to land at Seletar Airport would have a huge impact on development in Pasir Gudang because it would limit the height of buildings and structures like cranes. – January 6, 2019.
