Why an inquest for Adib’s death, asks Umno

UMNO objects to the setting up of an inquest to look into the cause of the death of fireman Muhammad Adib Mohd Kassim, said the party’s acting president Mohamad Hasan.

He said the police should conclude the investigations swiftly by arresting and prosecuting those who caused Adib’s death.

“The authorities should not use the inquest proceedings to determine how Adib died, and not find his killers,” he said in a statement today.

He added that he found it strange that the attorney-general had called for an inquest when the matter was being investigated by the police as a murder case.

“Doesn’t the attorney-general believe in the credibility and ability of the police force in carrying out this murder investigation?”

He added the objective of an investigation to find the cause of the death was very different from finding out who killed Adib.

“Why is the government, through the attorney-general, trying to divert the people’s attention as though there can be closure for Adib’s death when the killer is still free?”

Mohamad also asked why it was Home Minister Muhyiddin Yassin who announced the inquest and not the attorney-general himself.

“This gives the perception that the home minister interferes in the police’s investigations and attorney-general’s prosecutions,” he said.

Yesterday, Muhyiddin said the attorney-general would be ordering an inquest to determine the cause Adib’s death after the post-mortem uncovered “a few clues”.

The Muslim Lawyers’ Association of Malaysia had objected to an inquest, however, saying it would delay justice, adding that Adib’s death was already being investigated by the police as murder.

Adib, 24, was a member of the emergency medical rescue services at the Subang Jaya fire and rescue station.

He died at the National Heart Institute in Kuala Lumpur on December 17 after he was allegedly assaulted by a mob during a riot at the Sri Maha Mariamman temple in Subang Jaya, Selangor, on November 27. – December 28, 2018.

  • Acting Umno president Mohamad Hasan said the inquest's mandate was to identify how Adib died, not identify those responsible for his death. Of course that is the all important question that begs for an answer. Which of the two versions is correct - deliberate act or accident? When this is established, the police can either close the file or go on to look for the culprits. Without an inquest, how is the police supposed to proceed - based on perception? All the firemen who were at the scene are known and can be called to give evidence at the inquest. This will go a long way to establish whether it was an accident or a deliberate act. Why does UMNO not want an inquest?? Is it not interested in finding the truth?? Is it afraid of the truth ??

  • No rationale that anyone would come out into a rioting people, unless he was attacked and pulled out.

It was claimed that the speech made by some ppl fanned the rioting. Also, even if it was an accident, the temple refusal to obey the law for so long have also contributed to the crisis. And they are still ignoring the court judgement till today. Imagine that, in western countries, refusing to obey court judgment will put you in jail, what more if such refusal contributed to a crisis until someone died.

Even if it was an accident (which is unlikely), the temple is also responsible, as they have long refused to obey the court judgement for so long and that also contributed to the crisis.

My view they are making etc diversions to avoid the court judgement, even until today.
And the opposition should ask the AG if contempt of court is ok? Is this PH rule of law?

  • Probably the truth may be against their interest. Whole country wants justice for Adib, but to dispense justice, the cause of death need to be known and the real culprit need to be identified. Not by mob justice or the thirst for race blaming.

Once the correct perpetrator identified, let the lynch fest begin.
