POLICE will haul up Umno president Ahmad Zahid Hamidi over several statements he allegedly made which are deemed offensive and provoking racial and religious sensitivities.

Deputy Inspector-General of Police, Noor Rashid Ibrahim, said Zahid is among several prominent politicians to be questioned.

The Malays will rise in anger if the Pakatan Harapan government ratifies the International Convention on the Elimination of All Forms of Racial Discrimination (ICERD), Zahid said on Sunday.

“Don’t wait for the Malays to run amok. If (PAS president Abdul) Hadi Awang’swarning is not heeded (by the government), Umno and PAS will unite.”

Noor Rashid said today “160 reports have been filed in the past two weeks over provocative speeches. Some were tied to Ahmad Zahid and we are calling him.

“Of late, our analyses showed widespread racial and religious sentiments being used.”

Veterans’ group Patriot today urged police to crack down on parties spreading racial and religious hatred under the guise of opposing the ratification of ICERD.

According to Noor Rashid, others to be summoned include Minister in the Prime Minister’s Department P. Wathya Moorthy; Malay rights group Jaringan Melayu Malaysia president Azwanddin Hamzah; Gabungan 3 chairman Ragvinder Singh @ Reggie Jessy; his deputy, Amran Ahmad Nor; Rata assemblyman Chiong Yoke Kong; and Tras assemblyman Chow Yu Hui.

Also on the list is Edi Rejang or Muhamad Edi Mohamad Riyars, who gained notoriety after harassing and bullying a beer promoter recently.

Another man, who reacted to Edi’s video by insulting the Malays, will also be called up for questioning.

Noor Rashid urged both men to come forward.

“They should come forward as soon as possible. Although this is a free country, they must abide by the laws which preserve public order and security,” he added.

On the ICERD protest on December 8, Noor Rashid said the organisers have notified the police and applied for a permit. – November 23, 2018.
