Malays will run amok if ICERD ratified, warns Zahid

THE Malays will rise in anger if the Pakatan Harapan government ratifies the International Convention on the Elimination of All Forms of Racial Discrimination, warned Umno president Ahmad Zahid Hamidi.

“Don’t wait for the Malays to run amok. If Hadi Awang’s warning is not heeded (by the government), Umno and PAS will unite.

“We are not just giving a warning. We will show that if ICERD is not rejected, Umno, PAS, and Malays will unite and fight against it nationwide. Don’t push us to do that,” he said at a rally to oppose ICERD in Pasir Salak on Saturday night.

Zahid was referring to an earlier warning given by PAS president Abdul Hadi Awang that millions of people would hit the street to protest against the government proceeds to ratify ICERD.

The opposition leader said that Umno and PAS had been wrong by fighting against each other in the past, resulting in both the parties being defeated heavily in GE14.

He blamed former Umno president Dr Mahathir Mohamad for sowing the seeds of hatred among Umno members against PAS.

“Of the 62 years we had been in power, he was on top for 22 years. He taught us to hate PAS, DAP, and others, but now they (Dr Mahathir and DAP) are hugging and kissing each other.

“We had been cheated for 22 years, but Umno and PAS will work together from now on. We will set aside our differences in the name of race, religion, and nation. We unite to build a new nation,” he said.

Hadi meanwhile said in a press conference after the rally that the PAS-Umno unity was confined to their objections against ICERD only.

“We unite to object against ICERD. Nothing else. Politically, the next general election is far away,” he said.

Earlier at the rally, both Umno and PAS agreed to hold a rally to object to ICERD in Kuala Lumpur on December 8.

Hadi said the rally would be held nationwide.

Minister in Prime Minister’s Department P. Waythamoorthy was reported as saying that Malaysia would ratify ICERD and five other treaties as early as the first quarter of next year.

On November 1, Prime Minister Dr Mahathir had said that Malaysia would only endorse the convention after consulting with all ethnic groups in the country.

Umno, PAS, and several PH leaders have expressed concerns with the move to ratify ICERD, as they fear it will erode Malay rights as enshrined in the federal constitution.

Earlier this week, Waythamoorthy said the government would not abolish Article 153 of the federal constitution in favour of ICERD.

“The government has no intention to abolish Article 153.

“I also want to state as a lawyer that no discrimination is involved, and the special position of the Malays and natives, including those from Sabah and Sarawak, is safeguarded and protected.

“The government gives assurance that Article 153 of the federal constitution will not be abolished,” he had said. – November 18, 2018.

  • Arrest Zahid immediately for sedition. He is seriously indicating that he intended to create a mayhem and commotions. How real it will be,
    is another matter but stirring shits should not be condone. On the pretext of ICERD he is using it to galvanise support to ward off his 45 charges. Expedite his court case and render him helpless. He is just an ordinary leader of a lost cause party and hoping the tie up of racial partnership with PAS will provide additional shield for him to evade arrest. He is obviously intiating havoc to divert. Hadi will not move further from that when he is made awared that PDRM have him in the black book of the Memali sad incident, consequences from his "Hadi Amanat" . Once this two leaders are being made aware of their place in society , they will be quiet as a barking dog retreating from the main gate. No tolerance and mercy for trouble stirrer in this new era to make Malaysia great.

  • Most of these idiots have not even read the ICERD text. There is nothing there that is contrary to the Federal Constitution or Islam. Every Muslim country has ratified ICERD except us. If Saudi Arabia, Iran, Turkey, Afghanistan, Pakistan and Indonesia have ratified ICERD, what is the issue for the Malays/Muslims here?
