I’m not racist, my child goes to Chinese school, says ‘Edi Rejang’

THE man who verbally abused a beer promoter at a hypermarket in Kuala Lumpur last week insisted he was not a racist and that he had lashed out at the girl due to misdirected anger from work.

“I’m not a racist. I’m not against the Chinese or anyone. My child attends a Chinese school,” the man, known as Edi Rajang, said in a joint press conference with DAP lawmaker Lim Lip Eng last night.

A 5-minute video of Edi’s verbal statement was made available on Lim’s Facebook page today.

“I was exhausted from work. I was also angry at the time, and I misdirected my anger. I apologise to the woman. If I have the opportunity, I would personally apologise to her. It was a rude act, especially against a woman. We, men, should never treat women in such a manner,” he said.

“I would like to apologise publicly to all Malaysians, especially the female promoter,” he added.

Lim said he would mediate on Edi’s behalf and speak to the girl, but said the matter would ultimately be left to the police.

Lim, who is Kepong MP, had lodged a police report yesterday on the incident. Police are investigating Edi under Section 509 of the Penal Code for words or gestures intended to insult the modesty of a person, which carries a fine and jail term of up to five years.

Edi had uploaded a separate video on Facebook earlier this morning, apologising for his actions.

His apology came after a deluge of criticism when a video of his attack became viral early this week. Edi’s Facebook page, the source of the video, has since been deactivated.

In the 45-second video, which Edi recorded with his phone, he was seen to be confronting the girl for offering beer samples at the alcohol section of the hypermarket.

She was also insulted for failing to speak in Bahasa Malaysia, to which Edi said this was “bumi Melayu”. After she replied in English and later Mandarin, he used a vulgarity and made a lewd gesture at her. – November 21, 2018.

    • Agree. He has more courage than some of our past and present leaders who are not admitting their mistakes. Let him be an inspiration to all UMNO-BN leaders who have yet to admit stealing money from the rakyat. Let him be an inspiration to those responsible for Baling, Memali, May 13, MH370, Double Six, the Sabah Riots, Projek IC and other 'mysterious' incidents in Malaysia. May Edi Rejang inspire them to repent and admit their mistakes. He has apologised. Malaysians should forgive him. I hope there will be reconciliation between him and the salesperson.

  • he is only apologizing out of fear of his own safety and his daughter. In my opinion, he should still be charged and fined.

    We will be sending out the wrong message if we let him go with an apology. There so many others like him. Must not forget that !

  • You know why this is happening? I'll tell you why. Cos we're still waiting for Pakatan to get serious about applying the rule of law. That is also why the UMNO/PAS/Badar chaps continue to act with impunity, thriving on the frayed edges of racial and religious sentiments.

  • Whatever your reason maybe Edi Rejang taking on a total stranger to release your anger from work is out of the equation. Your act is unacceptable and put a bad light and shame for Malays at large. Lucky thing you came to your sense and I hope its on your own rather than the critics you received anyway the damaged was done and its an uphill battle for you today's onwards as the critics would not stop any time soon. Be this a good lesson to you and others.

  • Come on people it is a misstep on his part and he has apologised. I was furious when I saw the clip but this person was wrong to take it out on the poor Carlsberg promoter . Look the girl with 7 A s have to Cari Makan like the rest of us . Move on la people !

  • We should all take cue from this incident that playing up racial issue is BAD and DANGEROUS for the country. The UMNO and PAS supporters must realise this. Police should take action against these supporters if they step outside the line of racial harmony
