Reprimand MPs who disrupted Waytha Moorthy, says Kit Siang

THE Barisan Nasional and PAS lawmakers who defied the speaker’s directives and disrupted Senator P. Waytha Moorthy’s reply on Monday should be referred to the Committee of Privileges, said DAP stalwart Lim Kit Siang.

Lim said the incident where opposition MPs “shouted and yelled incessantly” to stop the minister in the Prime Minister’s Department from delivering his speech during the ministerial winding-up on Budget 2019 was the “greatest disgrace”, adding that such a thing had never happened before in the Dewan Rakyat since 1959.

“Have parliamentary standards in Malaysia degraded so much in the past half-century? Is the Malaysian Parliament next to graduate to fist-fights and physical attacks on the speaker as happened in other parliaments?” Lim said in a statement today.

Lim slammed four of the MPS, who were former ministers.

“Why can’t the Umno and PAS members of parliament exercise the necessary parliamentary decorum and dignity to allow Waytha Moorthy to have his say, however vehement they may disagree with him, and then respond to him, whether in Parliament or outside?”

Waytha Moorthy came under heavy fire in the Dewan Rakyat after being called on by opposition MPs to explain his about-turn on Malaysia’s plans to ratify the International Convention on the Elimination of All Forms of Racial Discrimination (ICERD).

Waytha Moorthy said there was now no deadline for the government’s consultation process with various stakeholders on ratification of ICERD, as Putrajaya wanted to be sensitive to the people’s concerns. – November 21, 2018.

  • Uncouth, barbaric. This is the standards most of the opposition MPs. Yang Berhormat? Should learn to hormat and listen to other opinions then you can agree to disagree.

  • This is where the Speaker must stand firm and play his role in reprimanding the MPs concerned.
