LEANING back in his chair and admitting he is feeling every one of his 93 years, the world’s oldest leader Dr Mahathir Mohamad says his second stint as Malaysian premier is taking its toll as he grapples with everything from fending off China to paying down a mammoth national debt.

“I should be dead now, actually,” joked the nonagenarian leader in an interview with AFP today.

  • Younger Malaysians should know that in 1957 when our British colonial rulers since the 18OO's granted the then Malaya independence (Merdeka) we inherited from the British democracy, a good system of efficient administration, the English language in govt & as the medium of instruction in schools, a country rich in natural resources. Dr. Mahathir laments above that our govt machinery was almost destroyed under Umno-BN.

    • In school textbooks around 1957 Malaya (before the formation of Malaysia in 1963 with Sabah, Sarawak & Singapore -before the latter withdrew in 1965) was described as the "LAND OF MILK & HONEY". I believe that given our British heritage described above & unique racial mix known the world over we can achieve greatness again, with good governance.

    • With good governance & a corruption-free mindset, there is enough money for looking after everyone & to improve most everything, plus increasing our savings..
