UMNO supreme council member Ahmad Maslan has said he is not one of the 40 party lawmakers asked to join Bersatu, and insisted he will continue to serve as an active opposition member in Parliament.
“I wasn’t called to have any discussions with the other side. I am not among those courted. But some people have informed the president and (they) have been summoned and confessed.
Ahmad, who is Pontian MP, said whatever decision is made on those asked to leave the party will be made collectively by the supreme council members.
Bersatu supreme council member A. Kadir Jasin recently said that 40 Umno MPs may defect to Bersatu.
Many in Bersatu, which was formed in September 2016, are formerly Umno leaders, members or supporters.
Bersatu won 13 parliamentary seats in the 14th general election in May, compared to the 50 seats held by ally PKR, which is the most number of seats held by an individual party.
Bersatu now has 14 MPs following the recent defection of Umno’s Jeli MP Mustapa Mohamed, the former international trade and industry minister. – October 31, 2018.
