MOTORCYCLE lanes on highways must be upgraded so they are suitable for high-powered motorcycles and reduce the risk of crashes, said Malaysian Highway Authority (LLM) chairman Jalaluddin Alias.

He said some motorcycle lane entrances in Penang and Perak are unsafe for high-powered motorcycles and can cause crashes.

“Highway concessionaires are urged to upgrade (motorcycle) lanes or provide appropriate facilities for this type of motorcycle to ensure rider safety,” he told reporters after visiting the LLM Traffic Management Centre in Kajang today.

He said more than 10,000 road crashes were reported along LLM-supervised highways from January to May this year, with about 200 fatal cases involving motorcycles.

Jalaluddin said highway concessionaires must also upgrade motorcycle lanes against bad weather, including by lowering the risk of motorcyclists being hit when they stop under overpasses to shelter from the rain. – Bernama, June 26, 2023.
