Police investigating Zahid for sedition

POLICE are investigating Umno president Ahmad Zahid Hamidi, suspected of sedition, and insulting and slandering the judiciary after 12 reports filed regarding his speech at the special party briefing on Saturday.

Bukit Aman’s corporate communications chief Skandaguru Anandan said its CID’s classified crimes investigation unit will handle investigations.

“We are looking into 12 reports under section 4(1) of the Sedition Act 1948 and section 233 of the Communications and Multimedia Act 1998,” he said in a press statement today.

Section 4 of the Sedition Act covers anyone who “does or attempts to do, or makes any preparation to do, or conspires with any person to do” an act with seditious tendency, such as uttering seditious words, or printing, publishing or importing seditious literature, is guilty of sedition.

Section 233 of the Communications and Multimedia Act covers improper use of network facilities or network services.

During his speech, Zahid backed jailed former prime minister Najib Razak’s claims that he had not received a fair trial, following the the Federal Court’s decision to uphold his conviction for corruption.

Yesterday, Amanah mobilisation bureau chief Mohd Sany Hamzan had made a police report at Dang Wangi police station, alleging that Zahid had insulted and slandered the judiciary, the Attorney-General’s Chambers, and other institutions including the monarchy, in pressing home Najib’s claim.

A similar report was made by Bersatu Youth information chief Mohd Ashraf Mustaqim Badrul Munir at the same station.

Najib is currently serving a 12-year sentence at the Kajang Prison after the apex court upheld his abuse of power, money laundering, and criminal breach of trust conviction involving RM42 million from SRC International Sdn Bhd last week. – August 30, 2022.
