PRIME Minister Najib Razak’s visit to see Anwar Ibrahim in hospital indicates that the latter is a political prisoner, says opposition leader Dr Wan Azizah Wan Ismail.

Wan Azizah (PKR-Permatang Pauh) said the visit marked the first time in Malaysia’s history that a prime minister has visited a prisoner.

“So far, the prime minister, deputy prime minister and a cabinet minister have visited him.

I feel this is an indicator that Anwar is a political prisoner,” she said at the media room in Parliament today.

On November 17, Najib and his wife, Rosmah Mansor, visited Anwar at Hospital Kuala Lumpur, followed by Deputy Prime Minister Dr Ahmad Zahid Hamidi and his wife, Hamidah Khamis, the day after.

It was then followed by Tourism and Culture Minister Mohamed Nazri Aziz’s visit on Thursday.

Earlier today, N. Surendran’s (PKR-Padang Serai) motion to debate Anwar’s imprisonment and conviction in Parliament was rejected by Deputy Speaker Ronald Kiandee.

“I am disappointed that the motion was not allowed to be debated in Parliament,” said Wan Azizah.

“As Surendran had said, where else can we discuss it other than in Parliament?”

Surendran said the motion was brought following a statement by Asean parliamentary members, who called for Anwar’s immediate release as they believed his imprisonment went against international standards.

“Earlier today, I announced an immediate motion under Standing Order 18(1) for the issue regarding Anwar’s imprisonment and conviction to be discussed in the Dewan.

“Unfortunately, my motion was rejected by the speaker with an absurd excuse. The speaker said that the matter had been decided in court,” he said.

Surendran said only cases that were ongoing could not be discussed in Parliament.

“It is evident that it is another attempt to deny motions from the opposition that are politically sensitive to Barisan Nasional.

“I’m disappointed because we have tried to negotiate (discuss) Anwar’s trial, which was unfair, but we were denied each time.” – November 28, 2017.

  • Wan Azizah and PKR ---- for heaven sake stop dreaming. Anwar will not be freed or has his conviction be debated as a motion in the parliament. Keep the naivety and focus on winning the GE14 to free your PKR leader. If the lay man in the streets can comprehend the act as a sandiwara by the Umno misfits in their inure and callousness to sentiments and humanity, this pedestrianism in drama could only negatively draw despisal and incurr wrath to strengthen the resolves to ensure an absolute victory in the coming election and affirmed the demise of UmnoBN.
