NAJIB Razak has reiterated that he is not a thief.
The former prime minister said this as he walked out of the sessions court in Kuala Lumpur today after he was slapped with 25 charges in relation to the RM2.6 billion “donation” he claims to have received from Saudi royalty.
“The RM2.6 billion issue was used to the maximum to tarnish my name.
“This court case will give me the chance to clear my name now,” he told reporters at the Kuala Lumpur court complex lobby today.
Najib who spent the night at the Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission’s (MACC) lock-up yesterday played down the gravity of the case saying that it was “not that bad”.
“If you truly understand the case, the 25 charges (are) nothing because there are three stages.
“When the money came in (deposited), when it was taken out (withdrawal) and when the money was returned back. So if you look at it from the three stages, it was not that bad,” he said.
The prosecution in Najib’s case opened proceedings today by charging the former prime minister with four counts of corruption under the MACC Act before proceeding with the other 21 charges under anti-money laundering laws.
Police said earlier today Najib faces 21 charges in relation to the 1Malaysia Development Berhad scandal.
But the charges were increased when he was brought into the Kuala Lumpur sessions court this afternoon.
The four charges were in relation to two transfers amounting to US$681 million (RM2.6 billion) channelled into Najib’s personal bank account in March 2013.
Najib later expressed confidence that he and his team will succeed, citing that God would side with the righteous over the wicked.
Though he did not name the person, Najib took the opportunity to take a dig at Finance Minister Lim Guan Eng and Attorney-General Tommy Thomas by cynically saying that there was a case where someone was cleared of a graft charge without even being taken to court.
“I believe that I will be given a fair trial. God will side with the righteous and we believe that the rule of law exist in Malaysia.
“Unlike in one case where the accused was freed without being taken to court.” – September 20, 2018.
