PAKATAN Harapan’s Halimey Abu Bakar has officially defeated PAS’ Dr Halimah Ali to win the Seri Setia state seat.
Halimey received 13,725 votes to Dr Halimah’s 9.698 votes.
Halimey won with a majority of 4,027 votes.
Voter turnout was 44.1%.
On the low turnout, Halimey said it could have been due to the long weekend and the bad weather.
It started raining today at 2pm and it was still drizzling when polling closed at 5.30pm.
“I expected a 60% voter turnout but only 44% came out. But I thank all 44% who voted today,” he said in a press conference at Dewan Sivik MBPJ today.
He attributed his win to the fact that he was a local boy.
Halimey, 46 was born and raised in Kg Lindungan.
Halimey’s wife Suhati Bakri said her husband deserved to win as he had worked hard when he was a Petaling Jaya councillor.
“He has been in politics for 10 years as a councillor and has sacrificed a lot. But it has been worth it. I am truly moved by the victory,” she said.
The Seri Setia seat fell vacant following the death of its assemblyman Shaharuddin Badaruddin of colon cancer on August 2.
In the May general election, Shaharuddin won 29,250 votes to defeat Barisan Nasional’s Yusoff M Haniff (9,878) and PAS’ Mohd Ghazali Daud (4,563) by a majority of 19,372 votes. Independent S Vigneswaran LM Sanasee managed 217 votes. – September 8, 2018.
