A VETERANS’ group has lashed out at police for the failure to launch an investigation into a letter purportedly sent by the former government’s spy agency to the US Central Intelligence Agency (CIA), calling the inaction “unacceptable” and shocking.
“I am baffled and I am shocked that until today, no action has been taken by the police to investigate or to take action,” said Brig-Gen (rtd) Mohamed Arshad Raji, president of the National Patriots’ Association (Patriot).
Several days ago, copies of a letter allegedly sent by the research division under the Barisan Nasional administration to the CIA director Gina Haspel, were circulated by news outlets.
The letter, dated five days before the 14th general election, requested support for former prime minister Najib Razak’s administration in the event that the results of the election turned out to be close.
The letter was signed by the unit’s former director-general Hasanah Ab Hamid.
“This is treason and this is a serious matter. Sending a letter to CIA asking for help is not a simple issue. Police not acting is unacceptable,” Arshad told The Malaysian Insight.
Arshad also refuted claims that police can only begin investigations after a report is lodged, adding that he would lodge a police report today to speed up investigations.
“As this is a serious matter, the police do not need an official report to start probing. They can already do their own investigation.”
The Malaysian Insight attempted to contact Inspector-General of Police Mohamad Fuzi Harun, his deputy, Noor Rashid Ibrahim, federal Crime Investigation Department chief Wan Ahmad Najmuddin Mohd and Special Branch director Abdul Hamid Bador for comments, but has yet to receive any response.
“It is normal for a research group with interest in foreign relation and national security issues to work with intelligence agencies but it is not normal to write such letters asking for support directly,” Arshad said at a press conference today.
“It jeopardises national integrity. The department has no right to send the letter to CIA. The correct body is Wisma Putra. The so-called research department has overstepped its boundary.”
Mahamud Ahmad, a former CID chief, said today police must investigate the matter under Section 124B for activities detrimental to parliamentary democracy.
“This is the act that police must use to classify the case. It is very serious and we really hope that it won’t be repeated by anyone in the new Pakatan Harapan government.” – July 24, 2018.
