MAS Ermieyati Samsudin has quit Umno, a day after its party polls, which she felt did not offer any change in leadership.

This leaves the Barisan Nasional lynchpin party with 51 MPs.

The Masjid Tanah MP said she will sit in Parliament as an independent.

“Yesterday was a day when Umno members should have determined a new direction for the party. Here, we could have evaluated the reaction, sentiment and attitude of Umno members who are still in a state of denial.

“The hope of seeing at least 70% of new faces in the new party line-up at every level did not materialise,” she said in a statement today.

Over the last week, BN’s Bagan Serai MP Noor Azmi Ghazali and Bukit Gantang MP Syed Abu Hussin Hafiz Syed Abdul Fasal also left the party, citing issues with its leadership.

Noor Azmi has indicated that he would like to join Bersatu while Syed Hussin has said he will be an independent.

The former Puteri Umno chief said she felt the newly minted leadership did not accept the fact that it had been rejected by the people.

“They believe the party is a victim of hatred towards Najib Razak. The 1MDB scandal has made Umno the butt of the people’s jokes,” she said.

“What sort of renewal is this if we do not want to address the issues in the party and swallow the bitter pill?” the former deputy tourism minister asked.

Mas Ermieyati she will be an independent and provide check and balance against the Pakatan Harapan government in Parliament. – July 1, 2018.

  • If a political party does not have its foundation in the determination to advance a cause that is right and that is moral, then it is not a political party; it is merely a conspiracy to seize power.

  • When things are not to one fancies , it is natural to leave and if the other party were to accept them as party members do not expect loyalty!!!!!!!!!!!!!! The election commission should enforce a law where anyone leaving the party that he / she who stand on the platform to win the constituencies should forgo their winning and restand for a by election . This is good for for political divide. The cheap skate frogging shoulld be deterred and banned.

  • It's good thing she left. Mas realized that UMNO is in a deep pit and will be buried in no time. She is too smart n talented to remain there. Some party will recruit her no doubt.

  • Well said. The Party you left is too entrenched in its old ways. No cure at all.

  • You made the right decision as far as you are concerned. For umno, it's probably good riddance to traitors. For the rakyat, it doesn't matter much. For PH, you are welcome to send in your application form to the party of your choice. No guarantee you will be accepted.

  • The beginning of the splittering of UMNO and joining with Hadi's PAS..Its not enough to just leave anymore, those who want to join PH, must understand they go against the joining of UMNO-Hadi's PAS.

  • If Bersatu/Amanah don't want them, they will surely join PAS.
