MAS Ermieyati Samsudin has quit Umno, a day after its party polls, which she felt did not offer any change in leadership.
This leaves the Barisan Nasional lynchpin party with 51 MPs.
The Masjid Tanah MP said she will sit in Parliament as an independent.
“Yesterday was a day when Umno members should have determined a new direction for the party. Here, we could have evaluated the reaction, sentiment and attitude of Umno members who are still in a state of denial.
Over the last week, BN’s Bagan Serai MP Noor Azmi Ghazali and Bukit Gantang MP Syed Abu Hussin Hafiz Syed Abdul Fasal also left the party, citing issues with its leadership.
Noor Azmi has indicated that he would like to join Bersatu while Syed Hussin has said he will be an independent.
The former Puteri Umno chief said she felt the newly minted leadership did not accept the fact that it had been rejected by the people.
“They believe the party is a victim of hatred towards Najib Razak. The 1MDB scandal has made Umno the butt of the people’s jokes,” she said.
“What sort of renewal is this if we do not want to address the issues in the party and swallow the bitter pill?” the former deputy tourism minister asked.
Mas Ermieyati she will be an independent and provide check and balance against the Pakatan Harapan government in Parliament. – July 1, 2018.
