THE land border between Singapore and Malaysia will reopen to all vaccinated travellers from April 1, Prime Minister Ismail Sabri Yaakob and Singapore Prime Minister Lee Hsien Loong said in a joint statement today.

Travellers will also not be required to quarantine or undergo Covid-19 testing pre-departure and on arrival, they said.

“Today’s announcement reflects the good relations, multi-faceted cooperation and strong ties between the people of the two countries.

“This will definitely contribute to recovery efforts with a positive impact on the economy and well-being of the people of both countries,” Ismail said.

Lee said it was an important event in transitioning to live with Covid-19.

“Today’s announcement is an important milestone in our transition to life with Covid-19.

“It reflects the strong cooperation enjoyed by both sides throughout this pandemic and will help both countries emerge stronger from this crisis,” Lee said.

The quarantine-free travel is applicable to all travellers and vehicles, they added.

Earlier today, Lee also announced that from March 29, wearing masks while outdoors in Singapore will become optional, and group size restrictions for social gatherings will be doubled from five to 10 people, as the republic makes a “decisive move” towards living with Covid-19.

While the wearing of masks outdoors is optional when the change kicks in due to a “significantly lower” risk of transmission, it will still be required while indoors, Lee said in his televised address to the nation.

Singapore and Malaysia currently have a vaccinated travel lane arrangement, which allows for travellers to the country via land and air.

Malaysia will be transitioning to the endemic phase on April 1. It will see international borders open for the first time in two years. – March 24, 2022.
