PRIME Minister Ismail Sabri Yaakob visited Dr Mahathir Mohamad at the National Heart Institute (IJN) this afternoon where the former prime minister is said to be in stable condition.

Ismail was seen arriving just after 5.30pm and departing at around 6pm.

Later, in a tweet, Ismail told of his visit to Dr Mahathir, adding that he also met the latter’s wife, Dr Siti Hasmah Mohd Ali.

“I hope the family of Dr Mahathir will continue to remain strong,” he tweeted.

A group of journalists have been waiting outside the IJN as news circulated that Dr Mahathir was in the cardiac care unit.

No official statement on the ex-prime minister’s condition has been issued, but a source earlier said he is in stable condition.

The 96-year-old Langkawi MP was admitted for an elective medical procedure on January 7 and discharged on January 13.

He was admitted for a “full medical check-up and further observation” to the same hospital last month.

The two-time prime minister has had a history of heart ailments, suffering his first heart attack at the age of 64 in 1989. He suffered two more heart attacks in 2006 and underwent a quadruple bypass.

He was treated for a chest infection in November 2013, and again admitted with a similar complaint in August 2016. – January 22, 2022.
