MALAYSIA could record almost 7,000 new Covid-19 cases daily by the end of May or early June if people fail to comply with prescribed standard operating procedures (SOP), said Dr Noor Hisham Abdullah.

The director-general of health said Malaysia was initially projected to record about 3,000 cases by mid-May and 5,000 cases by the end of the month.

However, with daily cases exceeding 4,000 even in the first week of May, he said the figure could be more drastic by end of the month if people were slack in following the SOP.

“It was projected that Malaysia was supposed to record 5,000 cases by the end of May and around 3,000 cases by mid-month,” he told a press conference at the Health Ministry in Putrajaya today.

“But now, even two-week before mid-month, we have recorded more than 3,000 cases.

“If this continues, by the end of May, we may even record 6,000 to 7,000 cases daily.”

Noor Hisham said Malaysia has not failed in its efforts to tackle the Covid-19 pandemic.

He said it is not too late for the country to reduce the figures, but added that this could only be achieved with the cooperation of all Malaysians.

“Some claim that we have failed. No, we have not failed, but at the same time, we have not won,” he said.

For the second straight day, Malaysia recorded more than 4,000 cases today, at 4,519 new infections and 25 deaths. – May 8, 2021.

  • I hope all those ministers who benefited from allowing the bazaars to go ahead can sleep well at night. They are responsible for the spread which was both predictable as well as unnecessary

  • Frankly like other governments around the world ours too has to contend with multiple issues and unknowns in handling the pandemic. Theirs is a case of damned if you do, damned if you dont. It is time to opt for a serious, total lockdown. As one medical expert wrote, there is no use of talking about livelihood if there is no life.
