AHMAD Faizal Azumu resigned today as Perak menteri besar, along with his state executive council.

Faizal, who lost a confidence vote in the state assembly yesterday, said he presented the resignation letters to Perak sultan, Sultan Nazrin Shah, at an audience today at Istana Kinta in Ipoh.

“I expressed my gratitude and respect to the sultan for having accorded me the honour to serve under the auspices of his government.

“I presented my resignation letter and those of all the state executive councillors to Sultan Nazrin,” he told a press conference at the menteri besar’s residence.

Faizal, who is Chenderiang rep, lost a confidence vote in the 59-seat state assembly yesterday.

Ten voted for him, 48 against and one abstained. The motion was brought by Barisan Nasional assemblyman for Pengkalan Baru Abd Manap Hashim.

Earlier today, Faizal said he would only resign once Sultan Nazrin consents to the appointment of his successor.

He said he needed to ensure continuity of government operations and perform the duties of office temporarily, then resign.

“Let me fulfil my responsibilities to the people because the state government must continue to operate. To my adversaries, I say you have achieved what you want. Let’s not go to the extent of disrupting the administration.

“There are still some areas in Perak under the enhanced movement-control order, which the government is responsible for and there must someone at the helm to assist,” he said in a press conference at his office. – Bernama, December 5, 2020.
