THE government decided to enforce a conditional movement control order (CMCO) in seven states after a drastic rise in Covid-19 cases, said Minister in the Prime Minister’s Department Mohd Redzuan Md Yusof.

“The decision was made following the Health Ministry’s case report dated November 6 when 1,755 positive cases were detected in a single day,” said the special functions minister in a written reply to the Dewan Rakyat today.

Redzuan said the government then decided to impose the CMCO on all the states except Perlis, Kelantan and Pahang, for four weeks, from November 9 to December 6.

“The government felt a stricter approach was necessary before the situation became worse.”

The Alor Gajah MP was responding to Wong Shu Qi (Kluang-PH), who asked for the rationale for the CMCO on all the states except Perlis, Kelantan and Pahang, during ministers’ question time.

There were no follow-up questions as under the new rules, the government is only required to provide a written reply to questions.

The new parliament protocols, which include limiting each Dewan Rakyat session to 80 MPs, became effective yesterday.

Health experts and economists have questioned the need for the latest CMCO which is expected to affect the economy.

The experts have also criticised the Health Ministry over its lack of transparency in releasing data on the Covid-19 epidemic. – November 10, 2020.
